Do I Need GST for My Business?

Quick Answer
Not automatically. GST becomes mandatory once you cross the turnover threshold, sell on a marketplace, or sell across state lines — plenty of small, local businesses legally operate without it.
When GST becomes mandatory
| Situation | GST required? |
|---|---|
| Local sales, under threshold | No — optional |
| Turnover over ₹40L goods / ₹20L services | Yes |
| Selling on Amazon/Flipkart etc. | Yes, regardless of turnover |
| Selling across state lines | Yes, regardless of turnover |
GST registration gets treated as a universal rite of passage for starting a business, but it isn't one. It's required in specific situations: your turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods (₹20 lakh for services, lower in some special-category states), you sell on a marketplace like Amazon or Flipkart (most require it regardless of turnover), or you sell across state lines.
If none of those apply yet — you're small, local, and selling within your state — you can legally operate without a GSTIN. Registering anyway isn't wrong, but it adds a real monthly compliance obligation you don't yet need.
Where people get caught out is timing: waiting until a marketplace rejects your listing, or a client refuses to pay without a GST invoice, then scrambling. If you can see one of the trigger conditions coming in the next few months, it's worth registering ahead of it rather than after.
