Why Company Names Get Rejected — and How to Clear Approval the First Time

The three rejection patterns

Most rejections fall into three buckets: too similar to an existing company or LLP name, too similar to a registered trademark in a related class, or containing restricted words that need specific approvals or minimum capital (think 'Bank', 'Exchange', 'National').

'Similar' is broader than founders expect — plural forms, phonetic matches, and translations of existing names all count. 'TechNova' won't clear if 'Technova Solutions' exists in a related activity.

How to pre-clear a name

Before filing, search the MCA company database and the trademark registry side by side. A name clean on one and taken on the other still fails. Add a distinctive element — a coined word or uncommon pairing — rather than a generic descriptor, which also serves the brand later when you file its trademark.

File two names in the application in preference order. A well-researched first choice plus a genuinely distinct backup clears in one pass for most applicants; two variations of the same risky name wastes the second slot.

Name approval and trademark are different games

MCA approval gives you the corporate name; it gives no brand protection. The reverse also holds — a registered trademark doesn't reserve the company name. Serious brands run both checks before committing to packaging, domains, and marketing spend.
