Barcode / GTIN Registration
A GTIN is a globally unique product identifier licensed through GS1; the barcode is the machine-readable symbol that encodes that identifier for retail and supply-chain use.

Who it’s for
When you may not need it — A service business with no trade item may not need a GTIN. Some marketplaces permit a product-ID exemption for eligible categories/brands, but that exemption is platform-specific and is not a GS1 allocation.
Verified at-a-glance facts
Key facts table
| Change | New GTIN normally required? | Control |
|---|---|---|
| New product or material variant | Usually yes | Apply current GS1 GTIN Management Standard |
| Different net quantity/pack size | Usually yes | Each trade item must be distinguishable |
| Case, inner and consumer unit | Often separate identifiers | Map packaging hierarchy |
| Artwork-only correction | Not automatically | Assess whether trade item changed |
| Product discontinued | Do not casually reassign | Follow GS1 reuse rules |

Questions founders ask
Is a barcode image purchased online the same as a GS1 licence?
No. Verify the identifier’s licensed company and marketplace/customer acceptance.
Does every colour or size need a different GTIN?
Distinct trade items normally need distinct identifiers. Apply the current GS1 management standard to the exact change.
Does a GTIN make the label legally compliant?
No. It identifies a trade item; Legal Metrology, FSSAI, BIS and sector declarations are separate.
Is there a guaranteed approval time?
No statutory guarantee should be advertised. Completeness, verification and GS1 processing control the timeline.
